Tips for Building a Healthy Relationship with Your Partner

Through relationship writing, you learn a lot about what it takes to build a healthy relationship with your partner. While many people assume that sex or having money in the bank are the foundations of a healthy relationship, that’s not necessarily true. So, it’s time to really answer the question: what does it take to build a healthy relationship? Let’s find out now.

Your relationship needs to build on a purpose

While most of us enter a relationship completely love-struck without knowing what we want with the relationship, it’s important to do some soul searching before going into a relationship. That way, when you enter the relationship, you know what’s right (and wrong) for you and if the person in the relationship is someone that fits with you.

Communication is key to resolving conflict

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in relationship writing, it’s that to build a healthy relationship, you need to resolve conflict healthily. Yes, you’re going to have your arguments, that’s a normal part of any relationship, but it’s how you process your conflict that matters.

Instead of burying your conflicts and pushing them to the side, you need to address them and talk them out. Knowing when to apologize is also a crucial part of conflict resolution. Saying sorry when you’ve made a mistake is a must if you want a healthy relationship.

Show your partner appreciation and attention

To build a healthy relationship, you’re going to need to invest time and energy into your relationship. You remember the “honeymoon” phase, right? That’s the period where you shower your partner with affection and give them around-the-clock attention. Naturally, as time passes, the appreciation and attention fades; however, this is when you need to ramp things up.

You need to put the extra effort into giving your partner attention and showing them affection. It can be done by surprising them with their favorite meal, cuddling on the couch, listening to them talk about their day, etc.

Make time to spend together

It’s easy to get caught up doing routine tasks, especially if you have a full-time job and kids. It doesn’t give us much time to spend alone with our partners. But, research has shown that couples who do activities together, stay together. Reserve some time to play a board game together, try out a sport, or a new activity like horseback riding. Doing activities together increases oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which plays a key role in bonding.

Have “me time”

While spending bonding time with your partner is crucial, you also need to invest time in yourself. “Me time” is so important. If you don’t have time to unwind and self-reflect, how can you be a good partner? Being close with your partner is a good thing, but you do need that alone time for yourself. Whether it’s reading a book, going out with friends, or seeing a movie alone, this time should help you grow and bring new energy into the relationship.

See? You learn a lot from relationship writing, especially when it comes to knowing how to build a healthy relationship. Use these tips to help create a strong foundation in your relationship.
